 e effects of Household Air Pollution (HAP) inparticular\, remain one of th
 e most pressing global public health challenges. While theassociation betw
 een poor housing and health has a long history\, evidence of a direct link
  islacking. In this paper we examine a rare example of a public housing in
 tervention in ruralareas\, namely the large-scale provision of social hous
 ing in Ireland in the late 19th andearly 20th centuries. We exploit a nove
 l dataset of deaths-by-disease and deaths-by-age and-sex over the period 1
 871–1919\, to test the impact of the intervention on mortality. Ourdiffe
 rence-in difference estimates indicate that improved housing conditions re
 ducedmortality by as much as 1 death per 1000. This effect is driven by re
 ductions in deathsfrom respiratory diseases. We propose a likely mechanism
  that is consistent with thepattern of results we observe: a reduction in 
 Household Air Pollution through improvedhousing quality and better ventila
 tion. A cost-benefit analysis reveals that the schemewas a highly cost-eff
